Pearl Sizing

A Pearl’s actual size is a result of several variables – the health and size of the mollusk that it was produced in, the size of its nucleus, and the time that the mollusk was growing the layers of nacre to build the pearl while underwater.  Other factors that can contribute to the ultimate size include the environmental climate and nutrient conditions that affected the mollusk during its growth.

Spherical pearls can range from 2mm upwards to 20mm in diameter.  Whereas, irregular shaped pearls can sometimes measure up to 50mm in length.  As with other gems on the market, size does matter and affects the cost as it increases.  However, with pearls, it is the combination of the 7 Value Factors that will ultimately affect the value rather than just one or two of the factors alone.
